Mélusine, the builder fairy

It is in Poitou that the myth of Mélusine appears in the Middle Ages. After marrying Raymondin de Lusignan, nephew of the Count of Poitiers, the fairy promises to make her husband the most powerful lord of Poitou on condition that he swears never to see her on Saturdays. By marrying the fairy, Raymondin indeed becomes the most powerful lord of the region. Mélusine, fairy builder, built the castle of Lusignan for her husband and dotted the region with cities and fortresses.

But her husband breaks his promise and spies on his wife in her Saturday bath, discovering the body of a half-woman, half-snake creature. Mélusine then throws herself out of the window. Some say she still comes back some nights to haunt the castle.

Today, several castles associated with Mélusine can be visited in the region.
